What are mangroves?

Mangroves are salt-tolerant trees that are adapted to growing and living in coastal areas and the low-oxygen conditions of waterlogged mud. They have a complex salt filtration system and a complex root system to withstand salt water and wave action.

What problems do we want to tackle?

The coastal regions of Bangaldesh are struggling with various natural challenges, including riverbank erosion, storms and cyclones, as well as flooding and tidal disasters. These problems are mutually reinforcing as they destabilise the coastal regions and in turn increase the likelihood of future natural disasters. Climate change is further exacerbating environmental conditions.

The Project

Sequestration of carbon dioxide

Each mangrove tree planted removes over 600 kg of CO2 from the atmosphere during its growth period (25 years). As part of the CliManGrow project, we are planning to plant 25,000 plants in the project area.

Calculations for 25,000 mangroves:

Carbon sequestration rate

Total annual carbon sequestration

for the entire lifetime

24.7 kg CO2 per year and tree

617,500 kg CO2

15.437,5 t CO2 - equals 3.083 t CO2 per hectar
